April 23, 1943 - September 27, 2011
Carolyn Lee Monroe, 68, of Pittsburgh, Pa., formerly of Emlenton, Pa., passed away Tuesday, September 27th. Born in Sewickley on April 23, 1943 she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Gertrude Gravely Monroe. She, her parents, and her five siblings lived in Coraopolis, PA until the death of her father, Raymond, on April 17, 1945. After his death, her mother moved the family to Pittsburgh so that the family could attend the Ethnan Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church and the younger, school age children could attend church school. Carolyn attended the Ethnan Temple Church School until her mother moved to Emlenton, PA in 1955. She continued her education at Emlenton Jr. High School and Parker Sr. High School until she enrolled at Pine Forge Academy, a Seventh-Day Adventist boarding school in Pine Forge, PA. She graduated with honors. In 1962, Carolyn continued her education at Oakwood College in Huntsville, AL and in 1967 received her degree with a major in English. She started her career by working at the Allegheny conference of Seventh-Day Adventist as a teacher in Philadelphia, PA. When she returned to Pittsburgh, she continued her teaching career working for some years for the Ethnan Temple Church School and was employed in other positions in the city. When her mother, Gertrude, needed constant care, Carolyn became her caregiver and lovingly cared for her until she died June 26, 1999. Although Carolyn did not drive and had to use the transit system, she spent much of her free time visiting the sick and elderly taking time to listen to those who needed a listening ear. With loving words, an understanding heart and an assurance to all who called upon her that she would petition the God who sustained her, she sent many prayers to him in their behalf. Carolyn was well loved by family and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond D. Monroe, Jr and Robert K. Monroe. She leaves to cherish her memory to her sisters, Maxine Monroe-Richardson and Delores (David) Monroe-Jones, her brother Donald W. (Gracie Fay) Monroe, Sr, her many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and church family.
