William D. Say

William D. Say, 75, a well-known retired Oil City area schoolteacher and golf enthusiast, passed away Friday morning at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness. Born in West Freedom (Perry Twp.), Clarion Co. on April 15, 1948, he was the son of the late Pershing E. And Mildred H. Wallace Say. Graduating from Allegheny-Clarion Valley School at Foxburg in 1966, he pursued his education at Penn State University earning his Bachelor’s Degree in 1971. While at Penn State, he participated in the PSU Study Abroad Program at Salamanca, Spain in the spring of 1969. Bill was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) social fraternity. He kept in close touch with many of the members and enjoyed visits and trips with those members. His teaching career began in 1971 as a Spanish Teacher in the former Junior High Bldg. on Spring St in Oil City, and spent the remainder of his career teaching Senior High students at Lynch Blvd, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Foxburg Country Club where he was Club Champion in 1965. He enjoyed playing with a group from there for over twenty years traveling to Toftrees Resort to golf at State College, Pa. Bill was a member of the former Wanango Country Club where he was Mens’ Club Champion In 1991, 93, 96, 98, and 99. Bill held the distinction also of earning nine Holes-in-One during his golfing time. In addition to being a dedicated school teacher and avid golfer, he loved fishing. He liked to tie flies and fish the streams and lakes around Oil City. He made many trips to Oregon to fish with his cousin Warren Wallace on the Deschutes River. Many hours of local fishing were spent with good friend Steve Balot of Oil City. Bill spent many years hunting locally with his best friend Jim DeLong of Titusville. He had years of hunting with his Say family members, especially the uncles and the numerous Beagle hunting dogs they shared. He had a life-long love of music, especially enjoying the artists and songs of the 1950s and 1960s. Bill is survived by his sister-in-law Debbie Say of Shippenville and his brother and wife Brett and Monica Say of Pittsburgh. Also survived by Aunt Mary Kroh of Brookville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Edward R. Say and nephew Matt Say. Bill insisted there be no visitation or funeral service, but asked that friends play a round of golf, listen to oldies, or do something that brings joy to his memory.
